Macintosh Excel 2004 and Decision Analysis
Add-ins Current versions of TreePlan, SensIt, and RiskSim work correctly with
Macintosh Excel X and Macintosh Excel 2004.
Macintosh Excel 2008 and Decision
Analysis Add-ins
Current versions of TreePlan, SensIt, and RiskSim do
not work with Macintosh
Excel 2008, because Mac Excel 2008 does not support VBA (Visual Basic for
Applications) add-ins.
Macintosh Excel 2008 Workarounds
To use TreePlan, SensIt, or RiskSim on a
modern Mac, here are two methods:
(1) Install Mac Excel 2004. I have Mac Excel
2008, Mac Excel 2004, and Mac Excel X installed on a MacBook Air.
(2) Install Fusion, Parallels, or Boot Camp;
then Install Windows Vista or Windows XP; then Install Windows Excel
2003 or Windows Excel 2007. I have Fusion, Windows Vista, and Windows
Excel 2007 installed on a MacBook Air.
Macintosh Excel 2008 Background
In 2006, approximately a year and a half before
Mac Excel 2008 was released, the Macintosh Business Unit (MBU) at
Microsoft announced that Mac Office 2008 would not support VBA. I have
no insider knowledge, but I think it was a business decision based on
limited resources, the difficulty of developing completely new VBA for
the Intel processor, and other features that they deemed more necessary
for an on-time release of Mac Excel 2008.
Macintosh Excel 2008 Current
Situation
TreePlan is written in a combination of VBA and
the Excel 4 XLM macro programming language. SensIt and RiskSim are
written entirely in VBA. Although Mac Excel 2008 does not support VBA,
it does support (mostly) the Excel 4.0 XLM programming language. I tried
to develop an XLM-only version of TreePlan for Mac Excel 2008 , but I
found that it is not possible to get option buttons in dialog boxes to
work, which is an important part of TreePlan's design. The software
engineers of the MBU are aware of the XLM option buttons problem. If
that Mac Excel 2008 bug is fixed anytime soon, I may try again.
Macintosh Excel 2008 Future
Microsoft has promised that the next version of
Mac Excel will have VBA. I have no insider knowledge, but I expect the
next version of Mac Office to arrive in 2010 or 2011.

The download file is a compressed ZIP file. Double-click the ZIP file to extract the XLA add-in(s).
When you launch Excel and load one of our single-file add-ins, the add-in
code detects whether it is running on a Windows or Macintosh, and the add-in
then displays dialog boxes that are appropriately sized.
