Clipboard Cannot Be Emptied Error

Problem: You select a decision tree node, run TreePlan, select to modify the tree structure (for example, add a branch or change a node), click OK, and you receive an error message like the following:

"The Clipboard cannot be emptied. Another program might be using the Clipboard."

A similar error message on some systems is "Cannot empty the Clipboard."

Possible cause:  Another program is continuously monitoring the Clipboard.

When TreePlan redraws the tree diagram, Excel must also use the Clipboard for Copy and Paste operations.

If two applications try to use the Clipboard at the same time, the error message is displayed.

Solution:  Close applications that monitor the Clipboard before running Excel and TreePlan.

There are reports that Clipboard-monitoring applications include Outlook and the Skype add-in for browsers, and there may be other applications that cause the same error.

More information:

(1) A developer of Excel add-ins reported this problem to the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) support team.

On October 14, 2011, the developer wrote "The appearance of this dialog is clearly an architectural defect in Windows/Office clipboard management, and the MSDN team acknowledged this. They did not have a solution, and they promised to escalate this issue of MS Office development."

and search for "clipboard."

(2) A web page dated Sep 20, 2008, proposes several methods to fix the problem. The page (with misspelled "cannont" in its URL) is at

(3) Search Google or Bing for "clipboard cannot be emptied" or "cannot empty clipboard" or the exact wording of the specific error message you see (without the quote marks).
